Mothers who take a probiotic supplement at the end of pregnancy and during breast-feeding may reduce the risk of atopic dermatitis in their infants, but the supplements had no effect on asthma, allergic rhinoconjunctivitis or atopic sensitization. About 65% of patients with atopic dermatitis develop it in infancy. An estimated 10-20% of infants and young children have symptoms of the disease.
